Lincoln's Election and Secession

In 1860, slavery split the Democratic Party, and Republicans nominated a moderate: Abraham Lincoln, pledged only to halt slavery's spread. He won with 40% of the vote, without appearing on the ballot in 10 Southern states. To much of the South, his election threatened ruin. South Carolina called a secession convention.
