As a young single mother of 3, Joyce moved from St. Vincent to the states after seeing a newspaper ad about housekeeping jobs there. Eventually, she landed in Connecticut and began working with children, ultimately adopting 6 more of her own and becoming something of a matriarch in her New Haven neighborhood.
