Stranger with a Camera

In 1967, Canadian filmmaker Hugh O'Connor visited the mountains of central Appalachia to document poverty. A local landlord who resented the presence of filmmakers on his property shot and killed O'Connor, in part because of his anger over the media images of Appalachia that had become icons in the nation's War on Poverty. Filmmaker Elizabeth Barret, a native of Appalachia, uses O'Connor's death as a lens to explore the complex relationship between those who make films to promote social change and the people whose lives are represented in such media productions. Global education strategist and Kentucky native Dr. Vicki Phillips speaks with former U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Matthew Barzun, about taking the power of public education and transforming it into a system that can move Americans to the highest levels of performance in the world, including utilizing Kentucky's citizens, businesses, and others to help support this important mission. Phillips has served as director of education strategy and grant making for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; was a classroom teacher; and an education leader in local, state, and national organizations. John Howard Griffin is best known as the white man who in 1959 disguised himself as a Black man and then traveled anonymously through the heart of the South. From his experiences he wrote Black Like Me. This film focuses on Griffin's social activism and examines how a spiritual commitment led him from a segregated childhood in Fort Worth to fighting with the French Underground, sustained him during ten years of blindness incurred by war injuries, and inspired him during a prolific creative life as a writer/photographer. A Morgan Atkinson production.
