Ballads and Blues

Tanita Gaines' powerful voice has been compared to Aretha Franklin's. Jonell Mosser has sung backup for artists such as Etta James, B.B. King, and Bonnie Raitt. These two Kentucky artists perform old standards, blues, jazz, country, and rock 'n' roll with their own bands, then share the stage for two encores. A noted member of Gaines' band is Reese Wynans, whose career includes backing up blues great Stevie Ray Vaughan. A 2002 KET production.

Merle Travis: Guitar Man

Raised in the Western Kentucky coalfields during the Great Depression, songwriter and guitarist Merle Travis grew to worldwide stardom by the 1940s and 1950s. Today he is one of country music's most celebrated stylistic pioneers. His life story and his musical legacy are the focus of the documentary, "Merle Travis: Guitar Man". Perhaps best recognized as the original balladeer of the classic "Sixteen Tons" as well as hits like "Nine Pound Hammer" and "Dark as a Dungeon" - which all drew inspiration from the struggles of coal miners - Travis, who died in 1983, is also celebrated as the developer of a unique thumb-picking guitar-playing style eventually dubbed "Travis pickin.'" Captain William Clark of Lewis and Clark was the younger brother of Louisville founder George Rogers Clark. As part of the bicentennial celebration of the Lewis and Clark expedition, this docudrama looks back over the lives of the two brothers and their sister, Lucy Clark Croghan. Staged at the Croghan home, Locust Grove in Louisville, it was written and performed by Mandy Dick, Mel Hankla, and Bob Pilkington. A 2002 KET production.
