At the close of World War II, nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans were released from internment camps in remote and often desolate areas. Each was given just $25 and a train ticket to begin the long journey home. When they returned to the farming regions of the Western states, many found their farms leased, their farm equipment missing, and their homes razed to create more space for planting. Ken Kashiwahara hosts a remembrance of how they farmed strawberries, cut flowers, and found occupations outside of agriculture to survive, all while continuing to fight for their civil rights.
