For Release: 04/02/18 12:49 PM
The next episode of KET’s Kentucky Life showcases a thriving Bosnian community in Bowling Green, including an in-depth exploration of Bosnian coffee, which is central to their culture. The program also spotlights a cappella group The Northern Kentucky Brotherhood Singers and Murray woodworker Wyatt Severs. The episode airs Saturday, April 28 at 8/7 pm and Sunday, April 29 at 4/3 pm on KET and Monday, April 30 at 7/6 pm on KET2.
First, Kentucky Life travels to The Kentucky Museum at Western Kentucky University, where a recent exhibit – “A Culture Carried: Bosnians in Bowling Green” – highlighted the city’s growing Bosnian community, which now makes up roughly 10 percent of the local population. Viewers hear the backstories and accomplishments of two local Bosnian-Americans who have found a home in Kentucky, sharing stories that are emblematic of the journey taken by many who fled their war-torn country in hope of a more peaceful life.
While in Bowling Green, host Doug Flynn enjoys a cup of Bosnian coffee, which is unfiltered and higher in caffeine than American blends. Bosnian-American resident Sabina Husic tutors Flynn on the process of enjoying Bosnian coffee – which includes adding large sugar cubes – and explains that for Bosnians, coffee is a central part of their culture and family time.
Then, Kentucky Life shares the music of the Northern Kentucky Brotherhood Singers, a quartet that performs in an old-school a cappella style. Originally based out of the Ninth Street Baptist Church in Covington, the group has performed together for 26 years, serenading audiences at venues throughout the U.S., Canada and Spain.
Finally, the programs travels to Murray, where woodworking artist Wyatt Severs views his craft as a collaboration between the natural wood, simple tools and himself. A graduate of Murray State University, Severs has taught woodworking at arts and craft schools across the country and was named the Kentucky Arts Council’s Emerging Artist of the Year in 2016. He specializes in fine furniture, bowls and wood sculpture.
