The Atlantic Charter: The End of Colonialism

In August 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt met privately with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Desperate to enlist American support in World War II, Churchill reluctantly agreed, at least in principle, to the dismantling of colonial empires. Though the meeting was secret, word of a British-American agreement soon spread to Germany and Japan. Hitler accelerated his plan for the Final Solution for Europe's Jews, and the Japanese made plans to bomb Pearl Harbor.
