Penny & Red offers intimate look at life, career of Secretariat owner Penny Chenery

For Release: 04/13/18 10:01 AM

The 2010 Disney film Secretariat offered one version of the life of the famed horse’s owner, Penny Chenery, as portrayed by Diane Lane. But that version was perhaps more glamorized and Hollywood-esque than the true story.

To share a more raw and honest look at her life and legacy, Penny Chenery sat down with her son, filmmaker John Tweedy, in the documentary Penny & Red: The Life of Secretariat’s Owner, which airs Friday, May 4 at 9/8 pm on KET and Sunday, May 6 at 10/9 pm on KET2.

Originally released in 2013 – four years before Chenery’s death in September 2017 at the age of 95 – this revised, updated version of Penny & Red has been re-edited to include new interviews and information covering the end of Chenery’s life.

Weaving previously unreleased family photos, archival racing footage and revealing conversations between Chenery and her son, the film traces Chenery’s rise to become the First Lady of Racing. The result is an intimate, no-holds-barred reflection of her life and career as one of horseracing’s most famous trailblazers.

“I’m 91. There’s nothing more that I need to prove, and I might as well let the story be accurate,” Chenery told The Herald-Leader’s Janet Patton in 2013, when the film first debuted.

Penny & Red: The Life of Secretariat’s Owner is an independent production of Landlocked Films, produced and directed by John Tweedy and his wife, Beret E. Strong.
