New independent film spotlights Kentucky inmates’ use of poetry, plays to tell their stories

For Release: 04/21/17 11:45 AM

The new documentary I Come From showcases the poetry and creative writing of six inmates in Kentucky’s correctional system. In telling their stories and sharing glimpses of their works, the film spotlights how, for many inmates, crafting poetry and plays becomes a tool for navigating their current situation – and an expression of hope for a brighter future.

I Come From airs Monday, May 8 at 10/9 pm on KET.

Produced and directed by Robby Henson, a Kentucky-based filmmaker and artistic director for Danville’s Pioneer Playhouse, the documentary was created with assistance from the Kentucky Department of Corrections. It grew from Henson’s work as program director for Voices Inside, a theater outreach program that teaches writing and performance skills to inmates at Northpoint Training Center in Burgin, Ky.

“Their poems and plays reflect hard lives lived and past mistakes made,” Henson said, “but their words declare a wish – a will to survive and grow as human beings.”

The film, which includes music by Kentucky-born cellist and composer Ben Sollee, was selected to be screened as part of the 2016-2017 Southern Circuit film tour and was a winner of the audience award at the UPike Film Festival. Its KET airing marks its statewide debut.

I Come From is a Voices Inside production, produced and directed by Robby Henson.
