More Reading Strategies in Action
Research proves what teachers already know: Good readers are successful in school. Yet many students lack the reading skills they need to comprehend their textbooks, test questions, and other informational reading. In this era of accountability and high-stakes assessment, teaching students to read with understanding has become a necessary part of the content teacher’s instructional toolbox.
More Reading Strategies in Action is a CD-ROM-based professional development tool that shows you how you can teach your students to become strategic readers while you cover necessary content. Produced by KET in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education, this easy-to-use resource is helping Kentucky schools target a common area of need in a flexible, cost-effective format. Some Kentucky school districts have already incorporated More Reading Strategies in Action into school-wide professional development plans, while others encourage teachers to make it part of their individual professional growth plans.
About the Product
Take a Quick Tour! More Reading Strategies in Action features color-coded discs in four content areas: English/language arts (pink), mathematics (blue), science (teal), and social studies (purple). An additional disc (orange) is included especially for reading specialists, while a disc titled “Getting Started” (lime green) provides important technical information and software.
Information is presented and cross-referenced by reading strategy and by content area. Teachers will appreciate seeing classroom-tested strategies that are being used in their own content areas—as well as what teachers in other content areas are doing to help struggling readers be more successful. The strategies are explained and illustrated through extensive classroom and interview video footage, and the CDs include printable graphic organizers, study questions, and other classroom materials.
