KET aims to move the meter on health with new initiative: Be Well Kentucky

Nationwide, Kentucky ranks number one in deaths per capita from lung cancer and fifth in cardiovascular deaths. We are also the sixth most obese state in the nation. Inactivity and poor diet are contributing to costly and destructive chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cancer and depression.

In response to these challenges, KET is launching an ambitious initiative called Be Well Kentucky aimed at inspiring a culture shift in health attitudes and practices among Kentuckians.

"KET is uniquely positioned to make a real difference, both now and for the future," said KET Executive Director Malcolm Wall. "We will apply the enormous power of this statewide digital television network, with its award-winning outreach staff and working partnerships with educators, organizations, businesses, foundations and communities across the state, to address Kentucky's health challenges."

Be Well Kentucky will marshal an array of media and outreach services and activities to address the state's health problems by spotlighting health issues and solutions. The first step is the October 2005 premiere of the 13-part series, The CommonHealth of Kentucky, which will be followed by an outreach campaign that includes a toolkit for community engagement.

Be Well Kentucky will also include a Web site,www.ket.org/BeWellKentucky, as well as health literacy workshops for families, children and minority populations and other healthrelated programming.

KET is also working to build a statewide collaboration for a long-term commitment to improving Kentucky's health, including funding to expand the initiative. The full vision includes documentaries, on-going series and specials (live broadcasts, town meetings, and call-ins), school-based services and a statewide activity that everyone can join.

"Our children and grandchildren deserve the opportunity for a bright and successful future," said Wall. "Unless we actively commit to improving our health and theirs, that future may be squandered."
