The next Louisville Life celebrates the Louisville Zoo’s birthday boy, a year-old African elephant named Scotty, and visits two businesses Kentuckians often turn to for their own celebrations, Rebecca Ruth Candy and Nanz and Kraft Florists. The program, hosted by Candyce Clifft, airs Thursday, July 31 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT; Friday, Aug. 1 at 4/3 p.m. CT; and Sunday, Aug. 3 at noon/11 a.m. CT on KET2.On March 18, 2007, the first elephant was born in Kentucky. As the Louisville Zoo looks back on baby Scotty’s first year, viewers learn why Kentucky’s adorable pachyderm is significant to international conservation efforts. This segment also examines the zoo’s mission to ensure the survival of many other endangered species.
Then, Louisville Life learns the history of Rebecca Ruth Candy. In 1919, Frankfort residents Ruth Hanly and Rebecca Gooch, two substitute school teachers in their mid-20s, decided to venture into business. The two co-founded a candy enterprise at a time when few women owned their own businesses.
Next, the program visits Nanz and Kraft Florists, a Louisville business founded by German horticulturist Henry Nanz in 1850. He and Henry C. Neuner formed a partnership in 1872, and by 1880 had established 30 acres of flower gardens and 60 greenhouses in St. Matthews.
Then, Candyce meets Linda Valentine, executive director of the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which is headquartered in Louisville. An ordained elder, lawyer and former executive at Motorola Inc., Valentine is the first woman to hold the position of executive director of the council, which is the national mission program arm of the church.
Finally, the program looks at the life of Dr. Harvey A. Wiley, a local man who founded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
