The next edition of Kentucky Life features the Redbud Quilt Festival, a nationally known dog trainer and a look at the history of women’s basketball in Kentucky. The program, hosted by Dave Shuffett, airs Saturday, Aug. 2 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET1; Sunday, Aug. 3 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET1; and Sunday, Aug. 3 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2.First, Kentucky Life visits Union College for Barbourville’s annual Redbud Quilt Festival, which draws professional and amateur quilters from across the country. Offering quilting workshops, classes and contests, the festival is part of a town-wide celebration that kicks off the spring and summer tourist season.
Then, Dave and his canine sidekicks Charlie and Toby head to Green County to observe dog trainer Bill Matney at work. Matney explains his positive reinforcement technique for training dogs in obedience and teaching them new behaviors. Labrador and golden retrievers demonstrate what they’ve learned, including “saying prayers,” pretending to drive a vehicle and retrieving everything from drinks and dollar bills to a chainsaw.
Finally, the program examines the history of women’s basketball in Kentucky, which flourished in the early part of the 1900s. But in the 1930s, women’s basketball was discontinued throughout the state. Until then, however, many still argue that the popularity of women’s basketball far exceeded that of their male counterparts in the Bluegrass.
