Renee speaks with Dr. Mary Evans Sias, president of Kentucky State University, on the next Connections, airing Saturday, Aug. 2 at 3/2 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, Aug. 10 at 11:30/10:30 a.m. CT on KET2.Sias discusses her background, including her childhood and college years in Jackson, Miss. She was named president of KSU after serving eight years as senior vice president for student affairs and external relations at the University of Texas at Dallas. Having a keen interest in teen pregnancy rates and domestic violence, she also served as director of the Women’s Resource Center in Dallas.
Sias talks academic progress at KSU and the challenges presented by recent state budget cuts and rising tuition costs. She also discusses the importance of historically black colleges and universities, her successes and disappointments at the university, and plans for the future of the college.
