Pressroom Search:
Country music, Civil War battlefield and great basketball teams on next Kentucky Life

For Release: 2008-07-07 10:33:00

Kentucky Life profiles country music’s Skeeter Davis, visits the Perryville battlefield and looks back at two of the state’s best high-school basketball teams. The program airs Saturday, July 26 at 8/7 p.m. CT and Sunday, July 27 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET1, and Sunday, July 27 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2. Dave Shuffett hosts from the Shaker museum at South Union.

A Dry Ridge native, Davis became one of country music’s best-known singers by the mid-1950s. Her 1953 hit “I’ve Forgotten More Than You’ll Ever Know” launched a career that saw her perform all over the world and become one of the most popular members of The Grand Ole Opry. Her best-known hit was the song “The End of the World” in 1963. Kentucky Life profiles Davis, who died in 2004, and meets her brother, sister-in-law and childhood friend.

Next, Kentucky Life visits the hallowed ground of the Perryville battlefield. Kentucky’s largest Civil War battle was fought outside the small Boyle County town on Oct. 8, 1862. This bloody engagement left thousands of casualties in a single afternoon and marked the last attempt by the Confederacy to maintain a position in Kentucky. A reenactment of the Battle of Perryville is held each October.

The program then looks back at two of Kentucky’s most legendary segregation-era high school basketball programs: Louisville’s Central High School and Lexington’s old Dunbar High School. In 1932, Louisville Central won the Kentucky High School Athletic League (KHSAL) title, the first of five for its legendary coach, Willy Lee Kean. Dunbar’s Coach S.T. Roach led his team to two KHSAL state championships and, after integration, two runner-up finishes in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Sweet Sixteen.

Kentucky Life is a KET production, produced by Joy Flynn. Tom Thurman and Jessica Gibbs are segment producers for this program.
