Winston Churchill’s quest for his inner self took two forms: a constant thirst for exotic travel and a passion for painting and the beauty of words. His granddaughter Celia Sandys, who traveled extensively with him towards the end of his life, reveals the man behind the famous façade in the three-part Chasing Churchill: In Search of My Grandfather, airing Mondays, beginning July 21 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2 and KET HD and Thursdays, beginning July 24 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and KET HD.Churchill’s public life was a remarkable journey, but his life involved another, much more private journey: to find stillness at the core of his boundless energy and to find contentment within the turmoil of his lonely, brilliant and troubled life.
In the first part, “Wanted Dead or Alive,” Sandys begins her pursuit at Sandhurst Military Academy, which he left in 1894 to search for adventure and danger — and the adulation he craved. She travels to New York and speaks with former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who considers Churchill one of his personal heroes.
Next, “The Other Country” brings Sandys to San Simeon, Calif. to tour Hearst Castle, where Churchill was a guest at the table of William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies in the late 1920s. She motors down the Pacific Highway, just as Churchill did on a pleasure trip to Hollywood, where he visited his friend Charlie Chaplin.
Finally, in “Worth Doing Once,” Sandys travels to Morocco and to the South of France in search of those places that gave Churchill particular pleasure. He called Morocco “the most beautiful place on earth.” There, even during the turmoil of World War II, he found time to travel with Roosevelt and indulge in his favorite relaxation — painting.
Featuring newly discovered archival footage, photographs and private letters, diaries and paintings from the Churchill archives, Chasing Churchill examines his art and literature, revealing his dreams, anxieties and innermost thoughts.
